England
pulls off one of the most unexpected turnarounds you'll ever witness, securing
a spot in the quarterfinals.
Slovakia were the better team for the better part of the game, culminating in the Schranz goal that put them ahead early. However, double efforts from Bellingham and Kane saved England from an embarrassing knockout from the tournament.
England
overcame a fright to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, defeating Slovakia
2-1 in extra time.
Gareth
Southgate's team fell behind in the 25th minute as Ivan Schranz gave Slovakia
an unexpected lead, and they appeared to be out of the tournament as the game
entered injury time.
It
wasn't the most convincing of performances, but Bellingham's brilliance,
followed by Kane's game-winning header early in the first half of extra time,
ensured England's place in the final eight.
They
will next face Switzerland, who will be full of confidence after defeating
Italy 2-0.
However, Jude Bellingham delivered a brilliant
moment to score a breathtaking equalizer with seconds remaining, sending the
last-16 game into extra time.
Captain Harry Kane gave England the lead early in the first half of extra time, and they hung on despite some moments of tension.
Bellingham
told reporters that the team's achievement may motivate them for the rest of
the competition, and he characterized his goal as "one of the most
important moments of my career so far".
England
looked unimpressive in the first half, and manager Gareth Southgate made no
changes at halftime.
England
did, however, get closer to scoring in the second half, with two attempts: Phil
Foden's goal was rejected by VAR, while Declan Rice's shot hit the post.
"In the big moments, he steps
up."
England
captain Kane said this about Bellingham, who scored the amazing equalizer with
his team on the verge of elimination: "One of the best in our country's
history, I reckon." He is an excellent player. He works incredibly hard
for the team. He demonstrates his abilities by stepping up during critical
moments. That's what we needed, and he provided it for us today."
